Woolworths has stepped into the firing line over the proposal of a liquor license for BWS in Northam (WA) and the construction of a new Dan Murphy’s liquor store in Queanbeyan (NSW).

In Northam, local businesses and residents say another liquor store would be detrimental to the amenity of the town’s shopping centre.

Agricultural Region MP Paul Brown said after meeting with local townspeople: “I see the Boulevard as a respite centre for the elderly and the aged, and I’m afraid to say BWS would not be of any benefit.”

“There simply isn’t a demand in Northam for another liquor store. We have four clubs, three bottle shops and six hotels – which is an enormous liquor provision already”, Mr. Brown added.

Mr. Brown also said that there is concern about the proximity of St. Josephs’ school, located less than 200 metres from the shopping centre.

While in Queanbeyan, residents are voicing their disapproval of the build of a new Dan Murphy’s to the area.

Like residents in Northam, Queanbeyan locals are concerned over the proximity of the build, which is located near the town’s Centrelink office, bus interchange and park, with many also questioning the need for another liquor store, with seven already existing in Queanbeyan.

In Queanbeyan, the Council says that it has no control over the sale of the property and thus the build will continue, while in Northam, Mr. Brown hopes to object the application with the WA Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor.
