An update has been issued on a range of G J Wholesale spirits that were recalled last month.

A chemical agent described as “very dangerous” contaminated eight brands of alcohol – 700ml bottles of Verushka Vodka, Mississippi Bourbon, Los Cabos Tequila, Yachtsman White Rum, Mudgee Rum, Barman’s Choice Whiskey, Hunter Brandy and Her Choice Gin – that were available for sale from retail liquor stores in NSW, Queensland and the ACT.

A spokesman for NSW Food Authority told nine.com.au testing showed the chemical substance tert-butanol was present in the drinks.

“Tert-butanol is a foul smelling and foul tasting denaturant which is added to ethanol to make it unfit to drink,” the spokesman said.

“Tert-butanol is also a very dangerous product in its own right.”

“The NSW Food Authority will continue to work with the Australian Taxation Office to investigate the supply of these products and collect evidence for any enforcement action that may be appropriate,” the spokesman said.

The World Health Organisation lists the symptoms of exposure to tert-butanol as including dizziness, nausea, headache and vomiting.

Consumers should return these products to the place of purchase for a full refund and seek medical advice if they have health concerns.
