James Halliday’s Top 100 Wines live

November 10, 2020
By Ioni Doherty

Get tickets while you can to James Halliday’s 2020 Top 100 virtual event (live) hosted by Katie Spain.

For the first time, wine lovers have an opportunity to be included in the conversation ‘virtually’, as James shares his insights about this year’s best wines from across Australia.

This limited, ticketed event will explore the Top 100 wines (white, red, sparkling and champagnes) across vintages, varietals and price points. It will also give you a glimpse into some of Australia’s smaller, family-owned and run wineries that you may not see in major retailers.

There will be time for a Q&A, when James will answer your questions and share his recommendations of what to drink over the festive season.

James is Australia’s foremost observer of and commentator on wine. He has written, or contributed to, over 70 books (some translated into five languages), and currently writes for The Weekend Australian. He has won numerous awards and prizes and the annual Halliday Wine Companion, published by Hardie Grant Publishers, is Australia’s best-selling wine book.

James was a senior wine show judge for over 30 years. The annual Australia-wide Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon Challenges bear his name, as does the trophy for Best Pinot Noir at the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards. He co-founded Brokenwood (Hunter Valley) in 1970, and founded (with wife Suzanne) Coldstream Hills (Yarra Valley) in 1985; he was an executive winemaker for 37 years.

In 2010 James was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his contribution to the wine industry.

Host of the event, Katie Spain, is a journalist, wine writer and author. She is the current wine writer for The Advertiser, DeliciousSA, Sunday Mail, and feature writer for SA Weekend Magazine, Australian Wine Business Magazine, and pens restaurant reviews for the Good Food Guide, Gourmet Traveller’s Restaurant Guide.

She is a regular guest on 5AA and ABC radio, hosts events and wine forums across South Australia. If she’s not behind her keyboard she can usually be found scouring the country for stories (and cellar doors) in a tiny vintage caravan called Charlie.

Do you know Juno?

We’ll also do a quick demonstration of James’ Top 100 virtual assistant – Juno who has been trained to answer questions about the Top 100 wines (so you’ll always have the Top 100 handy). You can ask her questions such as: “Do you know what the best Cabernet Sauvignon under $30 is”?

To show our support for wineries, in what’s been a challenging year for many of them, we’re publishing the Top 100 wines with a direct link to them to encourage you to buy direct from the wineries.

We think you’ll find that there’s something in this event for every wine lover, from novice to aficionado, no matter what their budget or taste.

Buy your ticket at the special introductory price of $25, here. (Available till Monday 16 November or until tickets sold out).
