Construction began last week n Metcash’s new Victorian distribution centre which when completed will measure as large as 16 football fields, spanning almost 115,000 square metres.

Goodman says that the RBR (Riding Bounday Road) Hub in Truganina will be western Melbourne’s next generation industrial hub, strategically located within the state’s Western Urban Growth Zone.

Metcash will lease the centre from the Goodman Group and the warehouse will be equipped with new automation technology to enable efficient supply of products to supermarkets in Metcash’s network across the state.

Metcash Group CEO, Doug Jones said:  “The new mega DC will house a wider-range of products and deliver greater efficiencies in serving close to 4,000 stores and premises in Victoria.

“We believe independent family-owned businesses are the backbone of Australia and that ‘independents are worth fighting for’. Our network already includes some of the best stores in the world, and this investment represents our long-term commitment to continue supporting them and their local communities here in Victoria. Our purpose at Metcash is to Champion Successful Independents, and this DC helps to further strengthen their competitiveness so they can be the best store in their town.”

Jason Little, CEO Australia, said that hubs like this one close to large consumer populations help our customers meet rising delivery and service expectations.

“Metcash’s temperature controlled, high-specification space will support their distribution needs, sustainability goals, as well as the local economy – generating jobs, creating infrastructure, and enabling supply of products to supermarket shelves for Metcash customers,” he said.

The Metcash facility will include 2.4MW of solar, 35 EV charging bays, and 200,000 litres of rainwater storage.

Goodman Group says that construction of the facility will generate approximately 700 jobs, and once complete in 2024, the property will house 700 employees.
