The incident took place on 18 September last year at 11.30am, when police attending the Edgecliff Centre witnessed a person under 18 holding ALDI shopping bags containing four six packs of beer. The minor told Police that two of the four six packs had been taken from a friend’s home, while the other two had been purchased from ALDI.
The minor said he was asked to produce identification by a supermarket cashier but told him that he had lost his wallet. Instead the minor showed a photograph of a fraudulent driver’s licence on his mobile phone which featured a superimposed image of himself, and was then allowed to purchase the alcohol.
When questioned, the cashier said he was unaware that scanned IDs were not acceptable.
ALDI has said that its staff are trained to check the IDs of all persons who appear to be under 25 and measures have been taken since the incident to prevent the sale of alcohol to minors in the future, including improved training and internal auditing of store procedures.
