The Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology (ASVO) will host CO23, the nation’s first industry-wide conference for climate mitigation, in Adelaide on 15-16 June 2023.

Supported by Wine Australia, the conference will bring together experts and early adopters of climate technology to give attendees the tools to measure their emissions and take action to reduce them successfully.

Brooke Howell, Vice President of the ASVO, said the conference would be groundbreaking as it will specifically address actionable steps to reduce emissions.

“CO23 is the most important conference that wine industry stakeholders will attend in 2023 due to the importance of the topic, its relevance to our future, and the practical solutions it will offer.

“Previous conferences have included topics on climate change awareness or adaptation to climate change. CO23 is specifically about what we can do to reduce emissions in the wine industry to mitigate climate change,” she said.

The conference will outline ways industry stakeholders can achieve emissions targets as set out by the soon-to-be-released Emissions Reduction Roadmap from Wine Australia, which aims to guide the industry to a carbon-neutral future.

Although hosted in Adelaide, the program will be live streamed in 16 wine regions around the nation, with break-out rooms in each location to give regional attendees the “opportunity to learn from your neighbour as much as learning from the experts,” said Howell.

Conference highlights include workshops and panel discussions on topics that provide innovative, realistic solutions for climate change. These include:

  • Emissions 101: how to measure and how to get started
  • Sector emissions reduction targets and how to achieve them
  • Emissions-efficient production systems and practices that can reduce emissions
  • Demonstrating your credentials and demystifying certification
  • Tackling emissions throughout the value chain.
