Stonier’s pinot noir tasting ‘SIPNOT’ celebrates 21st event

Attention pinot noir lovers: Stonier International Pinot Noir Tasting (SIPNOT) will be held in Sydney on September 11.

SIPNOT captures what is happening throughout the pinot noir world by looking at 12 carefully selected pinot noirs, while offering a forum to taste, appreciate and debate the qualities and characters of the wine included in the tasting line-up, which this year come from Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany and the United States.

Mike Symons, Senior Winemaker at Stonier, says that the event provides an opportunity to discover the multifaceted qualities of the category.

“Pinot noir is an enigmatic grape variety that captures everybody. Just when you think you know everything about it, you discover something new and it just throws you,” said Symons.

SIPNOT alternates between being held in Sydney and Melbourne, but has also featured internationally in London (2011 and 2012) and Hong Kong (2014).

Last year’s SIPNOT.

As one of the founding wineries on the Mornington Peninsula and now a member of the Accolade Wines family, Stonier has a long history as a leading producer of pinot noir in Australia.

Stonier established SIPNOT in 2000 to stimulate greater knowledge and awareness of pinot noir, at a time when the category was a relatively unknown variety in the minds of general wine consumers.

Since that first SIPNOT event, the popularity of pinot noir in Australia has grown from being almost unknown, to being the third largest red varietal behind Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, generating $138m in retail sales value.

Moreover, in the last 12 months, pinot noir has grown at 23.2%, well ahead of red and white bottled at a 6% growth.

This year’s SIPNOT wine panel will be led by respected Australian wine identity James Halliday AM, who will be joined by highly regarded wine commentator Huon Hooke and Stonier’s Mike Symons while Aaron Brasher, Wine Marketing and Strategy Specialist, will host the evening as MC.
