Is this Australia’s best budget red?

Shingleback 2016 GSM – priced at less than $15 a bottle – has blitzed the judges at this year’s Royal Adelaide Wine Show.

The McLaren Vale red – which is currently selling at Dan Murphy’s for $12.99 a bottle – took out three trophies, including Best Grenache or Grenache Blend, Best Red Wine Under $20, and the prestigious Max Schubert Trophy for Most Outstanding Red Wine.

The win follows it taking out the George Mackey Memorial Perpetual Trophy for the best value red at the 2017 Sydney Royal Wine Show, as well as the 2017 Royal Queensland Wine Show’s trophy for top grenache or red Rhone varietal or blend, Gold Medals at the China Wine & Spirits Awards, Perth Royal Wine Awards and New Zealand International Wine Show.

Shingleback owner, viticulturist and senior winemaker John Davey told Adelaide Now“When you own your own vineyard and make your own wines, you manage the site right down to the individual wine. Our goal is to produce superior fruit that will make rich, ripe, and complex wines typical of McLaren Vale.”

He modestly told InDaily: “It’s a product we’ve been doing for a long time and it’s slotted into a label that’s at a fighting price and is the bread and butter of our company to a large extent. The prettiness of the Grenache, the strength of the Shiraz and savoury flavours of the Mourvedre are creating that synergy that’s getting this wine attention.

“There’s a lot of excitement and everything old is new again. Grenache is coming back into fashion but the reality is that sales will never be even a blip on Shiraz.”
