Here’s a little something to brighten your Monday … there’s a town in Canada called Dildo and it’s just opened a namesake brewery.

And Angela Reid, co-owner of the Dildo Brewing Company and Museum is hoping everyone can stop by and “get a little taste of Dildo.”

The Newfoundland brewery received a $300,000 grant from the federal and provincial governments to help set up processing facilities and has big plans for the future.

Craft brewing is booming in Newfoundland, with close to 20 new breweries opening or preparing to open by next year. Dildo has a slight edge over the competition with its unique name and the puns it provides for its beers.

Brewmaster Lionel Rodrigues recommends the “Stout Dildo”, which he describes as having a “coffee, toffee flavour”. He told Canoe the beer is a shout-out to his friends in South Dildo.

“I’m a big fan of the double-entendre,” he laughed. “I jokingly call it an homage to our South Dildo neighbours.”

Rodrigues admits the brewery’s name has caused a few issues. An equipment shipment to the brewery was recently held up in US customs for nine days due to its destination.

No one is quite sure where Dildo got its distinctive name, but locals guess it has something to do with a 16th-century Spanish sailor or an antique nautical device. There have been moves to change the name over the years, but all attempts have failed.

So how big is Dildo? The current population is  around 1200, which swells with crowds of tourists eager to have their photo taken with attractions such as Captain Dildo, a hardwood statue by the docks.

And now there’s a brewery to slake their thirst.

“We’re definitely a community that’s proud of who we are,” Reid said. “First and foremost, we’re proud Newfoundlanders, but we’re also very proud Dildonians as well.

“We own it, and we’re all good about it.”
