Which World Class Cocktail Week Event Should You Attend?

World Class Cocktail Week kicks off in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane next week (7-13 May), with Australia’s top bars and bartenders helping to bring to life over 100 experiences, including masterclasses, tastings, venue take-overs and degustations.

Here’s our selection of the best events for you to learn the latest techniques and trends in mixology to replicate in your own venue or pass onto customers in your store.

Native Plants and How to Use Them
Monday 8 May, 7.30pm
Bad Frankie, Melbourne

Learn how to use native ingredients in your cocktails with World Class bartender Sebastian Costello and owner of Outback Chef Jude Mayall. The duo will talk through the life cycle, seasonal opportunities and flavours of a range of native plants like finger limes, lemon myrtle and pepper berry. You’ll also get to sample three cocktails that showcase Australian botanicals and spirits.

Seven Cocktails in Seven Days
Sunday 7 May – Saturday 13 May, 5pm
The Ugly Duckling, Richmond, Melbourne

Discover the art of pre-batching and fermenting, including how to to make and store your own cocktails.

No booking is required, but there is limited availability.

Ice Ball Masterclass
Monday 8 May, 6.30pm and 8pm
Tokyo Bird, Surry Hills, Sydney

Always wanted to be able to craft the perfect hand-chipped ice ball at your own bar? Tokyo Bird Bar Manager Yoshi Onishi will share his secrets and demonstrate how to carve an ice ball from a larger block in this intimate masterclass. Afterwards, you’ll be invited to have a go at creating your own ice ball and enjoy your final masterpiece with a Diageo Reserve Brand whisky. The masterclasses are limited to ten participants.

Mind Tasting
Monday 8 May, 8pm
This Must be the Place, Darlinghurst, Sydney

Step into the mind of a World Class bartender as they mix impulsive and random cocktails never made before. The one-off event will see experiments, trials, ramblings and scribbles brought to life by the team at This Must be the Place, as they actualise what goes on in the mind of a World Class bartender.

Martini Masterclass
Tuesday 9 May, 6pm
Moya’s Juniper Lounge, Redfern, Sydney

Discover the history of the classic dry martini from its first appearance in the early 1900s to its development through the 20th century. You will have the chance to try four versions of a Tanqueray martini during the discussion, along with cured meats and pickles.

Brisbane’s Best Bartenders
Tuesday 9 May – Thursday 11 May, 4pm
Maker, South Brisbane

One of Brisbane’s best bars is inviting two guest bartenders from different venues around the city to curate a unique cocktail menu of their favourite drinks. Running from Tuesday to Thursday, the bar at Maker will host some of Brisbane’s best mixologists, as well as Maker’s already impressive line-up of five bartenders who appeared in the 2017 list of World Class Top 100 bartenders.

No reservations required. The event will run on a first come, first-served basis.

Classic Cocktail Masterclass
Wednesday 10 May, 7pm
16B Logan Road, Brisbane

Canvas’ World Class Head Bartender Tristan Green will host a masterclass on classic cocktails during World Class Cocktail Week. You’ll receive a cocktail on arrival and two more during the evening as you learn about their history and how to make them. The evening will also feature antipasto and cheese, house-made dips and skinny fries.
