Tasmania’s Pirie Late Disgorged 2011 named New World’s Best Sparkling Wine

Pirie Late Disgorged Sparkling 2011 has taken out Trophy honours in Class 1 – Sparkling Wine as well as Wine of Show at the 2023 Global Fine Wine Challenge.

Pirie is one of Tasmania’s original producers of premium sparkling wine, founded by viticulturist Andrew Pirie.

Northern Tasmania is globally recognised for the quality of sparkling wine produced in the cool climate of 41-42 degrees south and Pirie produces some of the most acclaimed sparkling wines in the world.

The 2011 Late Disgorged is handcrafted in the traditional method from premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. And ten years on lees results in a rare and stunning cuvée showcasing rare complexity and depth.

Pirie Senior Winemaker Tom Wallace said the team are thrilled about the wine’s win against some of the finest wines in the world.

“It really is a great tribute to everyone involved in producing this wine, from the growers to our team in the winery, with Tasmania once again proving its quality on the world stage.”

Toni Paterson MW scored Pirie Late Disgorged Sparkling 2011 97 points and said the wine was ‘bright, fresh and zippy. Fresh lemon. Cracked wheat. Gorgeous brioche flavours. I love the length and energy of this wine.’

The Global Fine Wine Challenge is an exclusive wine show limited to New World nations. Participation is by invitation only, and each country (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA) is restricted to submitting only their top 120 wines. The very best selections across 22 classes are made by country representatives regarded for their intimate knowledge of their nation’s wines.
