Starward is celebrating its Tawny Single Malt Whisky being awarded a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWS).

The limited-edition Tawny cask was crafted as part of Starward Projects, a program that allows our Starward distillers to experiment with different whiskies and create flavour forward and unique expressions.

With some of the world’s best expressions of Tawny coming from within a day’s drive of the Starward Distillery, distillers embraced this accessible opportunity and fully matured its signature single malt whisky in Tawny fortified wine barrels.

Each barrel was a smaller 100L octave size to give this whisky an extra full-bodied taste. Starward distillers wanted a balance of character so opted for fresh Tawny barrels from Yalumba for vibrant fruity flavours, then charred Tawny barrels from SA Cooperage to add toasty oak complexity.

With notes of raisin, brown sugar, fig and dried orange, Starward describes it as “the ultimate straight-sipper whisky for the dinner table”.

Starward David Vitale

Starward Founder David Vitale (above) said: “Very few are judged a perfect gold medal score, so to receive this double gold for our whisky is phenomenal.

This whisky truly exemplifies our innovative ethos, it’s an example of what experimentation and a bit of ‘caution to the wind’ can produce. It’s Australian Whisky, it’s what we make it. Now, the world is celebrating it with us!”

Founded in 2000, SFWSC is one of the oldest competitions of its kind. Double Gold medals are awarded to the entries that receive a Gold medal rating by all members of the judging panel.

Starward Two-Fold and Starward Nova were also awarded Gold medals in their respective categories. Starward Tawny Single Malt Whisky is available at Starward.com.au. RRP: $119 per 500ml bottle.
