The award-winning 2018 Merlot from Leconfield Wines has been selected to be featured in Qantas Wine.

The family-owned business already has partnerships with Great Southern Rail’s luxury trains, while Jetstar serves its wine in business class on international flights.

Dr Richard Hamilton is a fifth-generation descendant of Richard Hamilton 1st who planted South Australia’s first wine-producing vineyards in 1837. Dr Hamilton and his wife Jette now own both Leconfield Wines in Coonawarra and Richard Hamilton Wines in McLaren Vale.

“Qantas, much like Leconfield Wines, is an outstanding company with a long history in Australia,” Dr Hamilton said.

“Qantas has an international reputation for operating the world’s safest airplanes and we have an international reputation for producing the world’s best wines. We’re honoured to be part of Qantas Wine and look forward to expanding our involvement.”

Previous Leconfield Merlot vintages have been highly awarded both nationally and internationally.

“Our Merlot has been a cornerstone of Leconfield for almost a decade,” he added. “We’re so glad that Qantas has picked up our leading wine. Year after year, our Merlot has seen recognition from some of Australia’s top wine critics like Huon Hooke, Winsor Dobbin and James Halliday. We’re really proud of our head winemaker Paul Gordon, who’s worked tirelessly to ensure our Merlot consistently excels.

“The structure and length of our Merlots are constantly mentioned as their best attributes by Australia’s most influential wine critics. Our Merlots consistently have a unique depth, softness and elegance that will make your jaw drop. If the most attuned wine tasters in the country love our Merlot, rest assured that you will too.

“Paul would be too modest to admit this himself, but he simply has a feel and understanding of Merlot that few winemakers in the country have been able to replicate.

“Everyone knows that Qantas is one of the best airlines in the world, and now it has one of the best wines in the world.
