Entries are now open to the Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge and island2island is calling on bartenders nationwide to enter and defend the global title previously won by Australian bartender, Mike Tomasic in 2014.

Entering bartenders will be up for the chance to win AU$10,000 prize money, a 12-month contract as the Australian Angostura Brand Ambassador and a trip to Trinidad during Carnivale, where the Global Finals will be held. At the Global Finals, the overall winner will receive a further US$10,000, as well as a two-year contract travelling the world as the Global Angostura Brand Ambassador.

Current Australian and Global Angostura Brand Ambassador, Mike Tomasic says he believes the Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge is the best cocktail competition globally.

“It’s a simple format. It encourages classically oriented cocktails without all the fanfare and fuss, and that means your cocktails have nowhere to hide”, Mike said.

While Allan Shearer, CEO of island2island (distributor of Angostura aromatic bitters and rum in Australia) says he is confident that Australia can take out the global title for another year.

“Australia has some of the most talented bartenders in the world. We have proved that three times now with three global winners coming out of Australia. We are now the country to beat at the finals in Trinidad.

“At this stage of the competition, we are looking for creativity and a good understanding of balancing flavours.”

Here are Mike’s top tips for entering:

  1. Keep it simple.

  2. Follow the rules to the letter; it’s amazing how many people fail before they’ve even started by now following the rules and guidelines of the competition.

  3. Use as many of the sponsor’s products as possible.

  4. Ask your guests and colleagues for their opinions on your drink.[/box]

Competition entries are open from today until June 15 at 11.59pm. Bartenders can enter via the island2island Facebook page (www.facebook.com/i2ibeverages). Heats will be held throughout July and August this year.
