To mark this year’s 420 Day, East 9th Brewing is giving Doss Blockos Hempire stockists the chance to win return flights, accommodation and VIP tickets to the High Times Cannabis Cup in San Francisco.
The Cannabis Cup has been described as similar to a beer/wine show, but centred around cannabis culture … judges from around the world score the entrants’ cannabis varieties (or strains) to win awards. The festival also includes live music and educational sessions.
For those in the know, 420 Day is held in the highest regard. April 20 (the 20th day of the 4th month) is the international day to celebrate all things cannabis. It’s also now become an anchor-point for campaigners to bring attention to laws prohibiting its use locally.
“It’s important to raise awareness that medicinal cannabis use has been legalised across Australian states (in varying degrees), but the next challenge is to see that it’s made accessible and affordable to those in need,” said Josh Lefers of East 9th Brewing.
Last year, Australian Senator and Greens leader, Richard de Natale spoke at 420 Day celebrations at Melbourne’s Flagstaff Gardens in front of thousands of cannabis supporters with a call to legalise the drug. With growing momentum this year, the event is set to attract even more attention.
Hemp, a variety of the Cannabis Sativa plant species, was banned in Australia due to its association with cannabis for around 100 years, until laws changed in late 2017. At the time, the team at East 9th knew a change was brewing and set their sights on releasing Australia’s first commercially available hemp beer. Doss Blockos ‘Hempire’ Hemp Ale, was released on November 12, the day the laws passed allowing hemp in food and beverages.
With ground organic hemp seeds added after fermentation, the Doss Blockos Hempire flavour profile is quite distinctive – think nutty and smoky, with a subtle creamy mouth feel – characteristics of the hemp seeds.
