Moët & Chandon may have been the official Champagne sponsor of the Golden Globes, but Beyoncé and Jay-Z chose to BYO their own bubbles to the ceremony.
The couple’s bodyguard was photographed holding two bottles of Armand de Brignac as they made their entrance … 45 minutes after the awards had started and just as Ellen DeGeneres’ was about to give her acceptance speech for the Carol Burnett Award.
Amy Kaufman, a reporter for the Los Angeles Times, tweeted: “@Beyonce and Jay-Z just walked in,” she wrote on Twitter. “They’re waiting until Kate McKinnon finishes speaking to take their seats. Is their bodyguard carrying bottles of alc for them?”
Jay-Z bought Armand de Brignac — also known as “Ace of Spades” for its distinctive label — in 2014 and featured it in his 2006 song “Show Me What You Got.”
Beyoncé also helped make it a household name when she poured a $20,000 bottle of bubbly into a hot tub in her 2016 music video for “Feeling Myself.”
Another Twitter user wrote, “Jay-Z owns Ace of Spades. Can’t be seen on TV with a Moët bottle in front of him.”
Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston scored glasses of the pricey drop, with Aniston noting on her Instagram: “Reese!? This is one of the many reasons I love you. We ran out of water at our table. So naturally, she asked Jay Z and Beyoncé for a glass of their champagne.”
As for the rest of the room at the Golden Globes ceremony … Moët & Chandon estimated 1500 Moët & Chandon Impérial minis were handed out to stars as they walk the red carpet.
Additionally, 125 cases of Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage 2009 and Moet Rosé Impérial magnums were poured at the Golden Globes, while an estimated 500 Moët Golden Hour cocktails featuring Moët & Chandon Impérial were served throughout the evening.
The cocktail was inspired by California sunsets, and was made with fresh pineapple juice, pink grapefruit-infused vodka, and garnished with pineapple smoked salt.
The premium champagne brand returned to the red carpet with its popular philanthropic initiative, “Toast for a Cause,” where nominees were invited to raise a toast with Moët & Chandon Imperial minis in support of their favorite charities on the red carpet.
For each toast raised, Moët & Chandon donated $1000 to the chosen charity in the nominee named.
Scarlett Johansson was among those who took part in the initiative on the night.
