Darwin’s Lola’s Pergola bar has become the first Northern Territory venue to be fined for breaching coronavirus restrictions.
NT licensed venues were allowed to reopen on May 15, but were warned they must maintain social distancing rules of 1.5 metres, serve alcohol with food and ensure no one remains at the venue for longer than two hours.
Police and environmental health officers issued a caution to Lola’s Pergola on May 15 for failing to serve separate meals to people consuming liquor, patrons not being seated while drinking and social distancing not being implemented.
One week later, concerned patrons reported that alcohol was being served without meals. The venue’s owner was provided with advice and education regarding the Chief Health Officer’s expectations.
But the next day, the venue was cautioned again and the following day the infringement notice and fine of $5495 was issued for repeatedly failing to adhere to strict coronavirus restrictions.
“This is a timely reminder that the onus is on licenced premises and individuals to adhere to Stage 2 restrictions of the Territory’s Roadmap to our new normal,” Acting Commander Shaun Gill said.
More than 11,000 compliance checks have been completed in the NT and 57 fines issued.
Venue forced to close
Darwin’s Beaver Brewery was forced to close on Friday after a large group of people arrived unexpectedly.
NT Police Acting Commander Shaun Gill said it was “to their credit” that the restaurant closed its doors for the safety of patrons.
A staff member of Beaver Brewery confirmed to NT News they chose to close their doors just after 7pm.
“A large crowd attended on very short notice and they were unable to deal with the public,” Gill explained.
