Five Australian wines have been selected for Wine Spectator’s prestigious Top 100 Wines 2018.
Each year, Wine Spectator editors survey the wines reviewed over the previous 12 months and select their Top 100, based on quality, value, availability and excitement.
The No.1 spot on the list went to an Italian wine – Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri-Sassicaia.
The judges described it as: “Rich and concentrated, this red features black currant, blackberry, violet, mineral and spice flavors. Dense yet lively, structured yet impeccably balanced, with vibrant acidity driving the long, fruit-filled aftertaste. The oak is beautifully integrated. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2023 through 2042. 17,200 cases made.”
Top of the Aussie drops was Jasper Hill Shiraz Heathcote Georgia’s Paddock 2015 at No.20.
It was followed by Penley Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra Phoenix 2016 at No.28; Leeuwin Chardonnay Margaret River Art Series 2015 at No.38; Yalumba Y Series Viognier 2017 at No.56; and Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River Filius 2015 at No.58.
The Y Series Viognier was the only wine of its variety in this year’s list.
According to Yalumba, the success of the variety in Australia is largely attributed to Louisa Rose, Yalumba Head of Winemaking (above), “who is considered by many to be an expert on the variety and one of the world’s most respected winemakers”.

As a leading Viognier producer we’re proud that our wines are recognised and loved all over the world.”
