Thousands of visitors flocking to the d'Arenberg Cube

About 1000 people a day have visited the $15million d’Arenberg Cube since it opened in McLaren Vale last month.

The striking five-storey building, which houses public and private tasting rooms, several bars, an art gallery and a restaurant, was the brainchild of d'Arenberg's chief winemaker Chester Osborn. It offers panoramic views over McLaren Vale, the Willunga Hills and the Gulf St Vincent and a unique experience for visitors to the region.

“A lot of people were worried it would be an eyesore, but people have been complimentary about the design of it,” Osborn told The Adelaide Advertiser“Everyone’s been very excited about the wine tasting and elaborate food.”

Speaking of elaborate food, it's the first restaurant in Australia to use a 3D food printer.

The Cube has attracted worldwide attention. Wine Enthusiast says: "Australia is a magical place populated by quasi-mythical creatures like wine-tasting koalas and talking kangaroos, where winter is summer, "football" (Australian Rules) is a some kind of unholy rugby-soccer-ish union, and a giant Rubik's cube just turned into a tasting room."

Vogue says: "Designer wineries are dazzling us. In Spain’s Rioja region, Frank Gehry’s Marqués de Riscal and Zaha Hadid’s Rafael López de Heredia Tondonia Winery have set a new bar for beautiful winemaking spaces. French vintners heard the call, with the family JM Cazes adding some design touches to their Château Cordeillan-Bages in the Haut-Médoc region of Bordeaux. But now the Aussies are getting in on this action."

The d’Arenberg Experience

d'Arenberg is offering a "choose your own adventure" approach to exploring the Cube.

It suggests visitors "blend the traditional cellar door visit with exciting discovery, luxury or culinary decadence. Explore the magnificent McLaren Vale region, take to the skies and soar above the coast in a Waco plane, blend and bottle your own wine or indulge in a degustation or a la carte meal."

Entry into the d’Arenberg Cube costs $10 per person, which includes a standard tasting at cellar door.
