Sparkke crowdfunds sparkling wine in a can

The Sparkke Change Beverage Company is adding canned sparkling wine to its range of socially conscious beverages.

Sparkke is an all-female team of young social activists who launched a small start-up craft brewery in Adelaide last year.

The women make beer, cider, alcoholic lemonade and ginger beer, all featuring bold messages on the cans that are designed to spark conversation about social change. Issues covered include sexual consent, LGBT and first peoples’ rights and immigration.

White Wine Bubbles is the fifth beverage to be launched by the team. It comes in a slim line 250ml can and features the message "Say I Do!" in support of marriage equality.

‘White Wine Bubbles’ is made by Sparkke winemaker Sarah Lyons (above) under the mentorship of Rose Kentish - Australia’s first Female Winemaker of the Year (AWIWA, 2015) and Gourmet Traveller Wine’s Winemaker of the Year finalist in 2014. The wine is made with a focus on fragrance, fruit quality and flavour complexity.

Marriage equality is an issue close to the heart of Lyons. She’s a queer woman who came out at the age of 14.

"I can speak from personal experience about what it’s like to grow up feeling marginalised," she said. "Our marriage equality message is based on Sparkke’s core values of universal fairness, inclusion and social equity. It’s fantastic to campaign for the rights of all Australians to marry if they wish to – regardless of their gender or sexuality – and at the same time produce a great fizz in a can."

While wine in a can hasn't taken off in Australia to the extent it's been embraced overseas - it's experienced triple-digit growth in the US - Sparkke says "we’re positive the portability and portion size benefits inherent in our cans are set to rock the Aussie market."

All Sparkke products donate 10% of direct sales donated to organisations that align with their causes.

For ‘Say I Do’, Sparkke has partnered with Australians For Equality, which recently launched the Equality Campaign, a joint initiative with Australian Marriage Equality that lobbies to win equal marriage rights for all Australians.

Clint McGilvray from Australian Marriage Equality said: "It is great to see Sparkke getting behind marriage equality and showing their support for every Australian being treated equally. Marriage equality will not change anything for the vast majority of Australians but will make a profound difference to the status and dignity of many."

White Wine Bubbles is being crowdfunded by Pozible. Click here for more information.
