Criollo tequila launches in Australia
Sophie Decobecq, creator and master distiller of Calle 23 tequila, has arrived Australia to launch her new creation - Criollo.
Australia is the first market in the world to see the final version of the new product, which was inspired by her celebrating the birth of her first child, Abel.
The name Criollo comes from the specific kind of blue agave that Decobecq used. In the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, close to hills, there are some specific blue agaves that - while at their full maturity - have a small size but an amazing concentration of natural agave sugars. This intrigued Decobecq, so she decided to create a new tequila using these small ripe agaves, locally called “Criollo”. Production proceeded with special care and love during her pregnancy.
Decobecq revealed to Tequila Aficionado that it has been challenging and rewarding to make her mark in the tequila industry: "Tequila is a male dominated industry, or to be more precise, a Mexican male industry. Meaning that there is a cultural dimension to it, with its own rules. Being a foreigner, you have to respect them or better you do your life somewhere else. I have been told only once by a tequilero that this was not a place for me, being a woman; this exception being completely forgotten thanks to many other tequileros who have made me a very nice space in their world."
The personal joy behind the name
A great coincidence is that “Criollo” also means “a person born in Spanish America but from European origin”. The English translation of Criollo is Creole. This is what Calle 23 is and it also represents Sophie's son, who does not have Mexican blood in his veins, but whose future will be closely related to Mexico!
The final result is a vibrant high proof tequila (49.3% A/V), with a nice complexity on the nose. A sip reveals citrus, freshly harvested agave, green pepper and dried fruits. These notes lengthen and linger in the finish.
